It claims to be in the tradition of the historic Relief Church from Scotland.〔(History and Practices ) from the (denomination's web site )〕 When the Presbyterian Church in America joined with the Reformed Presbyterian Church, Evangelical Synod in 1983, a group that decided not to go along with the union called themselves the ''Covenant Presbytery''. By 1985 this presbytery had grown to four presbyteries and become the Reformed Presbyterian Church in the United States. In 1990 it changed its name to the RPC in the Americas. Within a year, the four presbyteries of this denomination were in conflict. They firmly believe in the Regulative principle of worship and use only the Authorized King James version of the Bible.
